Thickness, shatter retention and how it differs from tint

In Hong Kong "security film" is often used loosely as another name for tint, but the two do different jobs. Security film is defined by thickness and tear strength: when the glass is struck it holds the fragments in place, cutting flying-glass injuries and slowing forced entry. Tint uses optical layers to reject infrared. If you want both, you need a thick film that also carries IR rejection.

How security film actually works

Security film is a multi-layer polyester laminate bonded with a high-strength pressure-sensitive adhesive. On impact the film's tear strength and adhesive hold the fragments in place, so the glass cracks rather than scatters — buying time to escape or call for help.

Thickness is measured in mils (1 mil ≈ 0.025mm). Ordinary tint is around 1.5–2 mil; security film starts at 4 mil and high-grade products reach 8 mil or more. Thicker film is far harder to heat-form and edge-finish, so installer skill matters more.

  • 4 mil: entry-level fragment retention
  • 8 mil: much better against sustained impact and pry attacks
  • Wet-glazed edges strongly affect real-world performance
  • Curved rear screens in thick film demand the most forming skill

Security film vs window tint: don't buy the label

Plenty of products marketed as "security film" are ordinary tint. The test is simple: ask for the film's mil thickness and tear-strength data. If the seller only quotes shade percentage and IR, it is tint.

If you want heat rejection, privacy and shatter retention together, choose a combined security/solar film or replace the existing tint with a thicker security laminate.

Who genuinely needs security film

Street-parked cars, commercial vehicles carrying tools and equipment, family cars, and chauffeur or executive transport are the main users.

On vehicles with tempered side glass, the value of security film is fragment retention and delayed entry — not making the glass unbreakable.

    Confirm thickness and test data

    Ask for mil thickness plus tear and impact test reports rather than buying on the word "security".

    Check the edge treatment

    Ask whether the edges are wet-glazed into the frame; edge anchoring decides whether the film stays put under impact.

    Verify legal light transmission

    Confirm the finished VLT on the windscreen and front doors meets Transport Department limits so the car still passes inspection.
