PPF or ceramic coating?
It was never an either-or

PPF is a physical barrier; ceramic coating is a chemical layer. One stops rock chips and scratches, the other handles hydrophobics, UV and easy cleaning. Six dimensions, stacking order, and how Hong Kong owners should split the budget.

They solve different problems

Many owners assume a ceramic coating removes the need for film. In reality the two act on completely different failure modes. A coating is roughly 1/50th the diameter of a human hair — it changes surface tension so dirt and water struggle to stick, but a stone travelling at highway speed carries tens of joules of energy and the coating simply is not there.

PPF is the inverse: a 150–200μm elastomeric TPU layer absorbs and spreads impact energy, and remains the only real answer to rock chips. The trade-off is cost, installation skill, and a factory surface that is slightly less slick than a fresh coating.

Can you stack both? Yes — and you should

The industry-standard build is film first, coating on top: PPF supplies the physical armour, then a TPU-compatible ceramic layer restores hydrophobics and stain resistance. The result is easier washing, less edge contamination, and longer gloss retention.

The order is not negotiable. A coated panel has very low surface energy, so PPF adhesive cannot key into it — you get lifting edges and bubbles. If your car is already coated, the coating must be machine-polished off before film goes on.

  • Correct order: paint correction → PPF → PPF-safe ceramic coating
  • Wrong order: coating → PPF (weak adhesion, lifting edges)
  • Use TPU-compatible coating chemistry, never a solvent-heavy glass coating

What makes sense in Hong Kong?

Long hot summers, heavy rain, acid rain and tree sap, plus tight car-park pillars and gravel on country roads. When the budget is finite the priority order is: front bumper + hood PPF > full-car coating > extending PPF coverage.

In other words, armour the front third with film, then let coating handle cleanliness and oxidation on the rest of the body.
