How do you assess EV battery health? The short answer
Battery charge percentage and one range reading do not establish EV battery health. SOC is current charge; estimated range varies with conditions. SOH or energy retention is more relevant but must be interpreted using the manufacturer’s definition and diagnostics. Follow model-specific charging, calibration and storage instructions rather than a universal 20–80% rule.
A lower range reading after charging does not automatically mean battery failure. This guide explains everyday charging, parking and assessment in Hong Kong; it is not a high-voltage repair diagnosis or a promise of a fixed lifespan increase.
SOC, estimated range and SOH are different measurements

| Measurement | What it represents | Does it establish health by itself? |
|---|---|---|
| SOC / state of charge | Current remaining charge percentage | No; it describes charge level |
| Estimated range | Predicted driving distance | No; affected by climate control, speed, hills, tyre pressure, load, route and temperature |
| SOH / energy retention | Health indicators such as usable capacity relative to new | More relevant, but interpret using manufacturer BMS / diagnostic definitions |
Practical ways to assess battery health
1. Start with manufacturer displays, apps or authorised diagnostics
Available information differs by brand, model year, battery configuration and software. Some Tesla Model Y vehicles offer Battery Health assessment or testing, but availability is not universal. Use your own handbook, regional version and authorised diagnostics rather than applying another owner’s screenshot.
2. Do not repeatedly discharge to zero to “test” the battery
Manufacturer health tests may require specific AC equipment, a starting charge level and an extended period, with system-controlled discharge. That is not equivalent to an owner deliberately deep-cycling the battery. Run a test only under the maker’s stated conditions and recommendations, not as monthly routine care.
3. Compare long-term records under similar conditions
Periodically record mileage, charge limit, usual route, average consumption, weather, tyre pressure and practical driving distance. Account for climate control, drive mode and traffic changes before seeking assessment of a persistent decline. These records are supporting evidence, not a self-issued warranty assessment.
Must every EV stay between 20% and 80%?

The 20–80% guideline is a simplification, not a rule for every battery chemistry, usable-capacity buffer or software strategy. Some batteries have different daily charging or calibration requirements, so charging fully should not be universally prohibited. Check your vehicle’s daily limit, departure and storage instructions; the latest manufacturer guidance takes priority.
Eight charging and parking habits for Hong Kong EV owners

1. Use the manufacturer’s daily charge limit
Where a charge limit is available, use the recommendation for your model and battery. Follow its calibration instructions rather than copying another brand.
2. Plan when and why you need 100%
A full charge can be appropriate for a long trip. Unless calibration instructions say otherwise, schedule completion near departure and avoid unnecessary extended parking at full charge.
3. Avoid making near-empty operation a routine
Plan destination and return charging rather than routinely waiting until the battery is nearly empty or leaving it parked at a very low charge.
4. Use scheduled charging at regular locations
Where suitable equipment is available at home, work or another regular location, schedule charging around your limit and departure. Public charging can supplement it; observe site rules.
5. Choose rapid charging according to need
Rapid charging is useful for trips and urgent top-ups; it is not inherently forbidden. Combine it with suitable AC charging where practical. One rapid charge does not establish damage; follow the maker’s power and frequency guidance.
6. Use manufacturer navigation and preconditioning
Use supported charging navigation, battery warming or preconditioning as directed so the system can prepare charging conditions. Do not modify thermal management yourself.
7. Check storage instructions before long parking
Before travel or storage, check recommended charge level, connection and top-up settings. Do not impose one storage percentage on every car; avoid extended parking at extreme charge levels.
8. Address warnings, impact and water exposure promptly
Contact the manufacturer or an appropriately authorised workshop for BMS, high-voltage, cooling or charging warnings, or after serious underbody impact or flooding. A display restart is not a repair.
Hong Kong heat and long parking: what can owners do?

●Choose shaded, well-ventilated parking where practical.
●Use supported cabin preconditioning or scheduled climate control as directed.
●Observe battery, cooling, thermal and charging warnings; do not disable protective settings yourself.
●Follow storage charge and connection instructions before extended parking.
Window film, sunshades and exterior care can improve cabin comfort or protect appearance, but they are not high-voltage battery maintenance and should not be claimed to guarantee longer battery life.
When should you arrange an authorised battery check?

| Situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| Persistent range decline in similar conditions | Collect consumption and route records for manufacturer assessment |
| Repeated charging interruption or failure | Record date, charging equipment and display warnings |
| BMS / high-voltage / insulation / cooling warning | Follow safety prompts and contact the manufacturer; stop use where directed |
| Serious underbody impact or flooding | Arrange specialist inspection even if the car still drives |
| Buying or selling a used EV | Review formal diagnostics, service history and applicable warranty terms |
Bring warning screenshots, recent charging records, range changes and dates. Do not open the pack, replace individual cells or alter power without manufacturer authorisation; high-voltage systems present serious hazards. If there is smoke, an unusual smell or abnormal heat, move away and seek appropriate emergency help rather than attempting repairs.
Separate battery health from exterior care
Battery, charging and thermal faults belong with the manufacturer or authorised high-voltage repair specialists. For separate exterior care, see the Hong Kong car-care guide, Tesla Model Y PPF guide and car wash services. Contact us for body-care enquiries, not battery diagnostics.
Sources and limitations
Checked on 10 October 2026 against the Tesla Model Y high-voltage battery manual, EPD public charging information and Transport Department battery replacement guidance. The US Tesla manual is a brand reference; use your Hong Kong vehicle handbook and displays for actual features and procedures.
Manufacturer and Hong Kong official guidance inform this article; model, battery chemistry, software and regional handbook instructions take priority. The illustrated 92% and 62% readings are not actual diagnostic results. Supplied images retain Chinese labels, with their guidance translated in the English text.
