PPF Buying Guide
Full-car PPF in Hong Kong — 2026 Buyer's Guide (Materials, Brands, Pricing, Installers)
Part of the PPF PRICING topic hub

Full-car PPF (Paint Protection Film) has shifted from a supercar accessory to a standard investment for mid-tier car owners in Hong Kong. Since 2024 the market has been flooded with new brands, materials and price points, and the fragmented information often overwhelms buyers before they even receive a quote. This pillar article has one goal: to give you a complete decision framework — materials, brands, installers and 2026 Hong Kong pricing — in a single 30-minute read.
Each section links to a dedicated spoke article for a deeper dive. Read straight through, or jump directly to the topic you care about.
1. TPU material basics — real PPF vs fake PPF
First, get one thing straight. Products sold as 'PPF' fall into two very different families: TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) and TPH / PVC hybrid films. True PPF is always TPU, because only TPU delivers self-healing, yellowing resistance and 10-year warranties. TPH / PVC films typically yellow, harden and lift at the edges within 3–5 years — they are entry-level 'pseudo-PPF'.

●Aliphatic TPU (recommended)
The most stable molecular structure with the strongest UV and anti-yellowing performance. It is the standard material behind flagship products such as GSWF Defender, and it is what makes a 10-year warranty defensible.
●Aromatic TPU (secondary)
Cheaper to produce but gradually yellows under long-term UV exposure. Typically limited to a 5-year warranty, and mostly found in entry / mid-tier products.
●Self-healing temperature window
The TPU topcoat self-heals light scratches (wash marks, fingernail traces) between 30–50 °C. In a Hong Kong summer the panel temperature easily reaches 40–60 °C, so the effect is very noticeable. In winter, warm water or a heat gun accelerates the same process.
●Thickness — 7.5 vs 8 vs 8.5 mil
The standard for full-car PPF is 7.5 mil (~190 μm). Front high-impact zones can be upgraded to 8 mil. 8.5 mil is the heaviest street-usable spec, suited to front-end rock-guard reinforcement rather than a full-body wrap.

3. Installer selection SOP — the best film is ruined by bad workmanship
The same GSWF Defender can look factory-fresh after 5 years at Studio A and lift at every edge after 3 months at Studio B. The variable is entirely the installer. Full-car PPF is a 40% material / 60% craftsmanship product, so choosing the right studio matters more than choosing the brand.

●Wrapped edges
Top-tier installations wrap the film into door jambs, under the bonnet edge and around headlight trims. Without wrapped edges, corners lift and collect grime within 1–2 years. When vetting a studio, ask to see real cars and physically feel the edge lines.
●Surface prep (KOCH-CHEMIE / 3D)
Proper prep is a pH-neutral wash, clay bar and IPA de-grease before any film is applied. Studios that skip this step end up with bubbles and dust spots within months. Professionals use a full KOCH-CHEMIE (Germany) or 3D (USA) chemical line and are happy to walk you through it.
●Dust-controlled environment
At a minimum, an enclosed air-conditioned bay with positive-pressure ventilation. An open-air car park or open workshop is an immediate no.
●Turnaround time
A 7.5 mil full-car install needs at least 3–5 working days. Anyone promising same-day completion is cutting corners on edge wrap or curing time.
●Warranty paperwork
A legitimate warranty document must list brand + product SKU + installation date + warranty length + transfer terms + exclusions (accident damage, chemical contamination, etc.). A 'warranty card' with no SKU and no signature is equivalent to no warranty at all.

Quotes more than 30% below these ranges deserve special caution: it usually means TPH masquerading as TPU, no edge wrapping, no genuine warranty, or second-hand / expired stock. These cases exist in the Hong Kong market — LETS GET WRAP has re-worked more than 40 such jobs between 2023 and 2025.
Wrap-up — a 3-step decision flow
●Step 1 — Set the material bar
No aliphatic TPU, no deal. No 10-year warranty, no deal.
