The Ultimate Guide to Tesla PPF in Hong Kong | Essential Areas & Pricing for Model 3/Y/S/X
Share this article

Tesla sales are booming in Hong Kong, but many new Tesla owners find noticeable stone chips on their front bumper, minor scratches on the A-pillar, and scuffed aluminum sills from shoes within a month of delivery. The reason? Tesla uses a softer, water-based paint finish. Coupled with Hong Kong's dusty environment and narrow underground car parks, PPF is almost essential protection for any Tesla.

Why is Tesla's Paint So Soft?

For environmental reasons and production efficiency, Tesla uses water-based coatings with lower VOCs, which are about 20% softer than the oil-based paints found on traditional BMWs or Mercedes. Real-world tests show that a light fingernail scratch can leave a white mark, a common nightmare for many Tesla owners. A 200μm thick PPF film can completely absorb these types of minor scratches.

Essential PPF Areas for the 4 Main Tesla Models

  • Model 3 (M Size)

Front bumper (low chassis prone to stone chips) · Hood (large front surface area) · A-pillar (high-speed airflow kicks up sand) · Trunk opening (frequently opened and closed, prone to scratches). Full car PPF starts from HK$35,000.

  • Model Y (L Size)

Includes all Model 3 areas + aluminum door sills (scratched by shoes when entering/exiting) + charging port cover + hidden door handle areas. Full car PPF starts from HK$42,000.

  • Model S (L Size)

Plaid series front lower lip + glass roof trim + hidden door handle areas + large door panels. Full car PPF starts from HK$48,000.

  • Model X (XL Size)

Falcon Wing Door opening/closing wear areas + lower edge of the giant windshield + wide body. Full car PPF starts from HK$52,000.

Tesla OEM PPF vs. Third-Party Shops: A Comparison

  • Tesla Original PPF (Tesla Center)

Material: Single brand (usually SunTek); Price: 20–30% more expensive than market price; Pattern: Original digital patterns, extremely high fit at edges; Disadvantages: Limited choice, long waiting list for appointments.

  • Authorized Third-Party Studios (e.g., LETS GET WRAP)

Material: Choice of GSWF / SunTek; Price: Transparent pricing; Pattern: Also uses Tesla original digital data for cutting, same fit; Advantages: High flexibility, can combine with ceramic coating + window tinting.

Tesla PPF Installation Process

  • Day 1 — Paint Surface Inspection and Deep Cleaning

Full car paint surface photographed and documented, clay bar + weak acid iron remover + polishing (if needed).

  • Day 2–4 — PPF Digital Cutting and Application

Tesla original patterns are computer-cut, technicians apply film in order by area. Larger Model Y / X require 4 working days.

  • Day 5 — Edge Inspection + Reassembly of Removed Parts

Headlights, taillights, rearview mirrors reassembled, edges confirmed sealed.

  • 48 Hours Post-Application

Avoid car washing. Adhesive curing period, slight bubbling is normal and will naturally dissipate within 2 weeks.

Common Questions from Tesla Owners

  • Will PPF affect Tesla software updates?

No. PPF only covers the paint surface. All sensors, cameras, and radar are not covered, so OTA software updates are completely unaffected.

  • How are Autopilot camera areas handled?

The camera area inside the front windshield does not require PPF. For cameras around the vehicle (8 on each Model 3/Y), we precisely avoid them.

  • Can I use Supercharging normally after applying PPF?

Yes. The PPF on the charging port cover and charging port area does not cover the metal contact points, so it completely unaffected Supercharging speed.

  • Is it okay to apply PPF during the original warranty period?

The Tesla original warranty is completely unaffected. PPF is a self-funded protective film applied by the owner and does not involve any chemical treatment of the original paint surface.

Tesla is an excellent EV, but its soft paint is its Achilles' heel. Applying PPF immediately after taking delivery is the most effective investment to protect the paint's pristine condition and resale value for 10 years.
