Crafting a Unique All-Electric Rugged Aesthetic: A Full Record of the SMART #5 Bespoke Two-Tone Color PPF Installation
Part of the PPF BRANDS topic hub

As the electric vehicle market flourishes, car owners' demands for personalizing their vehicles are also growing. Recently, Letsgetwrap (LG WRAP) welcomed a highly anticipated new model – the SMART #5. As the largest and most rugged SUV-style vehicle since the SMART brand's transformation, the SMART #5 inherently possesses a strong presence. However, the owner, who pursues ultimate taste, was not satisfied with the standard factory color. They wanted their car to not only have top-tier paint protection but also to showcase a distinctive, exclusive style.
After in-depth discussions and design with our professional team and the owner, we finalized a color change solution for this SMART #5 using CYBRIX Color PPF (Paint Protection Film). We boldly adopted a 2-Tone body design, full of technological flair and mystery – with CYBRIX IRONMIX GRAYISH BLUE (a matte grayish-blue with an iron-grey tone) as the main color, complemented by SATIN BLACK for the roof and subtle accents. Today, let's delve into Letsgetwrap's installation site to uncover the process and secrets behind this SMART #5's perfect transformation.

Breaking Design Boundaries: Exclusive 2-Tone Color Combination
Before the installation officially began, the Letsgetwrap design team spent considerable time communicating with the owner. The SMART #5's body lines are full-bodied and have a rugged, off-road feel. If only a single-color wrap were applied, while changing the color, it might make this mid-size SUV appear overly bulky.
For this reason, we proactively proposed a 2-Tone design to the owner. We chose CYBRIX IRONMIX GRAYISH BLUE for the lower half of the body (main body). This special matte grayish-blue exhibits a deep metallic texture under different lighting conditions, being both understated and full of futuristic tech appeal, perfectly matching the identity of an electric vehicle. For the upper half of the car (including the roof, A/B/C pillars, and some trim), we used CYBRIX SATIN BLACK Color PPF.
This two-tone splicing not only successfully 'lowers' the visual center of gravity of the car, creating the popular 'Floating Roof' effect seen in modern automotive design, but also makes the car's muscular lines more three-dimensional and sharp. The interplay of matte blue and satin black creates an excellent visual contrast, ensuring this SMART #5 will be a head-turner on the streets of Hong Kong.

Dual Benefits of Color PPF: Protection and Color Change in One
Unlike traditional PVC color change films, we used premium CYBRIX Color PPF for this project. Color PPF is based on high-toughness TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) and is significantly thicker than general color change films. This means it not only offers stunning color and texture but also possesses the powerful protective capabilities of traditional clear PPF – protecting against stone chips, scratches, UV aging, and even featuring a 'self-healing' function for minor scratches. At Letsgetwrap.com, we are committed to providing our clients with this top-tier automotive film solution that combines both aesthetics and practicality.
The Ultimate Test of Installation: Professionalism in Every Detail
Perfectly applying thick TPU Color PPF to a car's body is a significant test of a technician's skill and experience. While the SMART #5 appears boxy, it actually hides many challenging design details.
Challenge One: Seamless Transition of the C-Pillar and Roof Rack
The SMART #5's roof is equipped with a sturdy roof rack, and the C-pillar features the iconic SMART emblem. When handling the junction between the SATIN BLACK and GRAYISH BLUE, LG WRAP technicians had to use specialized Knifeless Tape for precise cutting, ensuring no damage to the original paintwork. This also ensured the two-tone demarcation line was straight and natural, as flawless as a factory paint job. The edges around the emblem were finished with extreme precision, leaving no gaps whatsoever.

Challenge Two: The 'Boss Level' of Full Car Wrapping – Rearview Mirror Special Texture Installation
Throughout the entire car's installation, the most difficult and mentally demanding part was undoubtedly the side mirrors. Due to their significant curvature, car side mirrors are inherently challenging to wrap. However, the SMART #5's rearview mirror design is even more unique – on the lower-middle part of the mirror casing, the factory designed a large area of densely arranged 3D raised dotted textures.

●Tension and Rebound of TPU Film
Color PPF (TPU) is thicker and heavier than traditional PVC film, making its elasticity more challenging to control. If overstretched on textured surfaces, the film is prone to lifting and bubbling within a few days due to TPU's memory effect.
●Adherence to Texture
The film must perfectly adhere to every tiny bump and groove without any trapped air. Improper application can result in the textured surface appearing as a blurry area of bubbles, severely impacting the aesthetics.
●Overall Consistency of Blackout Treatment
We selected SATIN BLACK for the side mirrors. To ensure no original base color is visible, every edge and detail requires perfect coverage.
Facing this 'boss level' challenge, our senior technicians employed extremely precise localized heating and pressing techniques. First, the technician accurately controlled the heat gun's temperature to soften the CYBRIX Color PPF to its optimal stretchable state, then evenly covered it along the aerodynamic curve of the rearview mirror. When the film covered the dotted texture area, the technician abandoned the usual large-area squeegee, instead using a specialized fine-point soft rubber roller and dedicated dot-pressing tools. With appropriate temperature, the technician patiently and meticulously pressed the PPF into every crevice of the texture, inch by inch. This process required not only precise control of hand strength but also prolonged, intense concentration. Ultimately, we successfully made this thick layer of satin black Color PPF adhere like a second skin, perfectly preserving the three-dimensional feel of the original 3D dotted design, showcasing an astonishing level of craftsmanship!
Challenge Three: Complex Front Bumper Air Intakes
The SMART #5's layered front fascia, with its intricate lower grille and anti-scratch material areas, features complex lines with multiple recesses and corners. We cleverly utilized SATIN BLACK to treat these complex three-dimensional sections, not only enhancing the car's aggressive front-end look but also, through our technicians' exquisite 'Deep Wrapping' technique, perfectly wrapping the film to the unseen inner edges. This ensures it won't peel or lift when washed with a high-pressure water gun.

Conclusion: Make The Impossible Possible
When this SMART #5, clad in its CYBRIX IRONMIX GRAYISH BLUE & SATIN BLACK two-tone livery, drove out of Letsgetwrap's studio and parked on a characteristic Hong Kong street, the intense visual impact was undeniable. This was not just a simple car color change; it was an artistic creation that perfectly blended the owner's individuality with automotive industrial design.
