Choosing the studio matters more than choosing the film. car wrapping Hong KongThe guide's 7-point installer checklist is worth reading before you place a deposit.

Edge lifting is the most common early PPF issue — typically at the hood leading edge, bumper wrap-arounds, and wheel-arch tuck lines. Many owners assume they need a full re-wrap the moment they see it, but the reality: within the first 14 days the fix rate is close to 100%; between Day 15-30 a heat-press repair still succeeds 80%+ of the time; past a month, remediation gets significantly harder. This SOP walks you through self-inspection, when to DIY, and when to return to the shop.

5 Common Causes of PPF Edge Lifting

  • 1. Adhesive not fully cured at the edges

For the first 7 days the glue is still soft. High-pressure washes or a petrol-station tunnel wash push water past the edge and defeat the adhesive.

  • 2. Bumper wrap-around over-stretched

To achieve a seamless look installers can over-stretch the film. The adhesive layer thins out, and long-term shrinkage overpowers the bond.

  • 3. Surface contamination not removed

Skipping iron-fallout decon, clay-bar or minor paint correction leaves particles that stop the adhesive from bonding properly.

  • 4. Owner-applied trim, badges or accessories

Anything stuck to or against the film pulls on the edge and lifts glue that hasn't fully cured.

  • 5. Long-term UV + heat cycling

Hong Kong summer body temps hit 70°C. After enough expansion/contraction cycles, the edges are always the first to micro-lift.

Day 1-14: The Free Re-press Golden Window

  • Photograph the lift immediately

Under natural light, capture position, size and direction with your phone. It helps the installer assess remotely and supports a warranty claim.

  • Do NOT peel or trim it yourself

The lifted film is still part of the whole sheet — peeling only spreads the lift and can force a full-panel replacement.

  • Book a return visit with your installer

In this window most reputable shops offer a free re-press — a few minutes with a heat gun and pressure roller and it's done.

  • No car wash for 24 hours after re-press

The re-bonded adhesive needs time to re-cure. Dry or lightly damp-wipe only during the first 24 hours.

Day 15-30: Heat-Press Repair Flow

  • Heat gun + pressure roller combo

Working from the centre of the lift outwards to push trapped air and loose adhesive back to the edge and re-bond.

  • Inspect the edge for oxidation and stains

If the lift has been present for 2+ weeks, dust and water spots may have crept in. The edge must be cleaned with a dedicated solvent before re-pressing.

  • 72-hour post-repair observation window

Watch for re-lifting or trapped moisture. If it holds at 72 hours the repair is considered complete.

5 Situations That Require a Full Film Replacement

  • 1. Lift area larger than 5cm

A large lift means the whole panel's adhesive has failed. Re-pressing only offers a temporary fix.

  • 2. Edge already yellowing or hardened

Aged TPU has lost flexibility. Pressing it hard just cracks the adhesive layer.

  • 3. Paint oxidation is visible underneath

Long-term moisture contact causes water spots and white oxidation — you need paint correction before re-wrapping.

  • 4. Re-lifts after 3+ heat-press attempts

Repeated failure means the substrate is compromised — often a primer or paint-prep issue from the original install.

  • 5. Beyond the 3-year warranty window

Adhesive ageing is irreversible. Post-warranty edge lift is more economical to solve with a full re-wrap.

4 Daily Habits to Prevent Edge Lifting

  • Monthly finger-check on every edge

After a wash, once the car is dry, run your fingertips along every edge. Any looseness — book the shop.

  • Avoid midday outdoor parking in summer

70°C body temperatures repeatedly stress the adhesive. Park indoors or in reliable shade (not under trees — falling leaves hit the hood directly).

  • Never use alkaline car shampoo

Shampoos above pH 8 accelerate adhesive breakdown. Stick to pH 5.5-7 dedicated PPF shampoo.

  • Professional maintenance every 6 months

A dedicated edge sealer applied by the installer extends adhesive life by 30-50%.

Edge Lifting FAQ

  • Q1: Will edge lifting resolve itself?

No. Once the adhesive lets go it only gets worse. Earlier action = lower cost.

  • Q2: Can I DIY with a household hair dryer?

Not recommended. Household dryers have imprecise temperature control — too hot deforms the PPF, too cool won't re-bond the adhesive.

  • Q3: Can I wash the car after a re-press?

Hand wash is fine after 24 hours; avoid high-pressure spray on that edge for 7 days.

  • Q4: I only noticed after a month — is it still fixable?

Often yes, but success drops to 60-70%. The installer may need to trim the lifted section out and patch in a fresh strip.

  • Q5: Is edge lifting covered by warranty?

The first 14 days are typically free. After that it depends on your shop's warranty terms — expect HK$300-800 in labour for a heat-press repair.
