PPF Maintenance SOP | Daily / Monthly / Annual Checklist

“Once PPF is applied, you don't have to do anything!” This is a common misconception among car owners. While PPF significantly reduces maintenance effort, proper daily care can extend its original 10-year lifespan to 12-15 years, and prevent issues like edge lifting or surface hazing. This article is LETS GET WRAP's complete maintenance SOP for car owners.

The Golden 14 Days After Application: Curing Period Precautions

  • No car wash for the first 48 hours

The adhesive has not fully cured, and water may seep into the edges.

  • Avoid high-pressure washing for the first 7 days

Direct high-pressure spray at close range may lift the edges.

  • Minor bubbling is normal

This is due to the adhesive solvent evaporating and will naturally disappear within 2 weeks. No action is required.

  • Avoid direct exposure to heavy rain

If possible, park indoors for 1 week.

Daily Habits (1 Minute)

  • Pre-drive inspection of the front bumper

Immediately wipe off bird droppings, insect remains, or tree sap with a wet wipe – the sooner the better, to prevent acidic substances from corroding the film.

  • Choose your parking spot carefully

Avoid parking under overhead pipes in underground car parks (water drip deposits), avoid parking too close to other vehicles (door dings), and avoid parking under trees (tree sap, bird droppings).

Weekly Maintenance (10 Minutes)

  • Standard car wash

Use a neutral car wash soap + soft sponge + two-bucket method. Avoid direct contact of strong alkaline cleaners or wheel cleaners with the PPF.

  • Dry immediately

After washing, dry with a clean microfiber towel to prevent water spots and mineral deposits from forming on the PPF surface.

  • Check edges

Gently feel the edges of the PPF. If any lifting occurs, contact the installer immediately for a free repair.

Monthly Deep Maintenance (30 Minutes)

  • Use PPF-specific spray sealant

Optional: Use PPF-specific maintenance products like GSWF Detailer or GSWF Boost to enhance surface hydrophobicity.

  • Clay Bar Cleaning

Light clay bar treatment removes embedded micro-contaminants (iron particles, tar spots).

  • Edge Inspection

Perform a full perimeter inspection of all edges, especially the lower front bumper, wheel arches, and door edges.

Annual Professional Inspection (Once a Year)

  • Complimentary Annual Inspection by Installer

Reputable PPF installers typically offer a free annual inspection, including re-pressing edges, surface polishing, and warranty card updates.

  • Deep Polishing

If the PPF surface appears hazy, a professional technician can treat it with a specialized PPF polishing compound (standard car paint polish will damage PPF).

  • Ceramic Coating on PPF

It is recommended to apply an additional layer of ceramic coating to the PPF surface every 1-2 years to enhance hydrophobicity and UV protection, extending the PPF's lifespan.

PPF Don'ts: 5 Things You Must Avoid

  • 1. Using strong alkaline cleaners

Wheel cleaners and engine degreasers in contact with PPF can cause adhesive breakdown and edge delamination.

  • 2. High-speed machine polishing

High-speed friction heat will damage the PPF's surface structure. Any polishing must be performed by a PPF-certified technician.

  • 3. Using blades to remove sticky substances

Bird droppings and tree sap should be softened with a hot towel and wiped away. Do not scrape with a blade — this will inevitably damage the PPF.

  • 4. Applying paint touch-up pens to the PPF surface

The chemical components in paint touch-up pens will dissolve the TPU surface layer, leaving permanent marks.

  • 5. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures (>80°C)

Avoid parking dark-colored cars under direct sunlight for too long in summer (especially over the engine hood); prolonged exposure to temperatures above 80°C will accelerate PPF aging.

How to Handle Issues?

If you notice edge lifting, surface hazing, or slight yellowing — contact your original installer immediately. Provide your warranty card number and photos. Reputable shops usually arrange free repairs or partial replacement within 1 week.

PPF is not a 'set it and forget it' product; it requires simple but consistent care. By following this SOP, your PPF investment will deliver maximum value.
