Window Tint vs PPF — 5 Confusions Hong Kong Owners Get Wrong
Share this article

Window tint is only one kind of car film. car wrapping Hong KongThe guide compares TPU PPF, colour PPF and window tint on lifespan, price and use case.

Every new-car owner starts planning protection right after delivery. But when they read shop menus or start collecting quotes, the terms "window tint" and "paint protection film (PPF)" cause endless confusion.

"Aren't they both a clear film on the car? Why does one cost several times the other?" Some owners even assume that premium window tint somehow also protects the paint. Here are the five most common confusions in Hong Kong — and why full-car PPF is still the irreplaceable investment in your car's exterior.

Window tint and PPF are two completely different products — location, purpose, regulation and budget all differ.

Confusion 1: they go in completely different places (inside vs outside)

This is the fundamental difference and the one most owners get wrong from the start.

  • Window tint

Applied to the inside of the windows (windscreen, rear glass, four side windows). It protects the occupants, the leather seats and the dashboard by blocking heat and UV.

  • Paint protection film (PPF / clear bra)

Applied to the outside of every painted panel (bumpers, bonnet, doors, roof, rear quarters). It protects the factory paint itself against physical impact.

Confusion 2: they do completely different jobs (thermal comfort vs physical defence)

The engineering goals, materials and function of the two products are unrelated:

  • The job of window tint

Built on a thin PET base with metallised or ceramic coatings. It rejects infrared (for a cooler cabin), blocks UV (protecting skin and interiors), and holds shattered glass together in an accident.

  • The job of PPF

Built on thick, highly elastic TPU. It absorbs and disperses external impact — highway stone chips, malicious scratches, door strikes in a car park — and self-heals fine scratches when warmed.

PPF is a physical defence on the outside of the car, tasked with stopping stone chips, scratches and door strikes.

Confusion 3: "my tint protects my paint from the sun" — no, it doesn't

This is a classic misunderstanding. Premium ceramic tint offers excellent in-cabin sun protection, but it does nothing for the paint on the outside of the car. Under Hong Kong summer UV, unprotected paint is the number-one victim of oxidation, yellowing and loss of gloss.

To keep factory paint bright and stable long-term, you need TPU PPF (which carries strong UV stabilisers) and/or regular premium coatings. Window tint alone will not prevent paint oxidation.

Only TPU PPF on the outside of the car actually protects the paint from UV and oxidation.

Confusion 4: the two products face completely different Hong Kong regulations

Regulation is a hard line for anyone driving in Hong Kong:

  • Window tint

The Transport Department enforces a strict Visible Light Transmission (VLT) rule — the windscreen and front side windows must be at least 70% VLT. If your film is too dark or non-compliant, the annual inspection fails, and the department can order the film removed.

  • PPF / colour change

Clear PPF doesn't change the appearance and passes inspections easily. Even if you install Colour PPF for a colour change, you simply update the vehicle colour on the licence within 7 days after installation and you're fully legal.

Confusion 5: budget and value are misjudged

Some owners compare the few-thousand-dollar cost of tint against the tens-of-thousands cost of PPF and conclude PPF is "expensive." That ignores the enormous difference in materials and workmanship.

Quality window tint upgrades comfort and privacy. Full-car PPF (LGWR's transparent price band of HK$19,800 to HK$26,800) directly protects the single most valuable and irreversible asset on the car — the factory paint. One up-front investment removes years of touch-ups, respray costs and colour mismatches, and materially lifts resale value.

Full-car PPF at HK$19,800–$26,800 protects the most irreversible asset on the car: the factory paint.

The smartest combination for a new car

The best budget plan is to do both at once: compliant premium ceramic tint on the glass for cabin comfort, and LGWR full-car TPU PPF on the paint for exterior protection and resale value.

Whether your car is regularly washed in Kwun Tong or detailed in To Kwa Wan, full-car PPF removes years of respray and paint-correction headaches. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions owners ask most often.

  • Can window tint replace PPF?

No. Tint goes inside the glass and manages heat and UV; PPF goes on the paint and stops chips and scratches — different jobs entirely.

  • Do I still need tint if the car has PPF?

Yes. PPF does nothing for cabin temperature; heat control still comes from compliant window film.

  • Can both be done in one visit?

They can share a booking slot, but we normally finish paint prep and PPF first, then fit the window film, to avoid cross-contamination.
